The grand annual technology festival CES 2024 ended in Las Vegas on January 12. In recent years, the International Consumer Electronics Show has become an important platform for car manufacturers. You won’t find the ordinary cars and concept cars from traditional exhibitions there. You will surprise few people with powerful and fast cars. At CES, only the new products that change fundamentally the established idea about technology are shown.
This year, developers took special interest in products using the latest models of artificial intelligence. Enthrallment with them was caused by the wide use of ChatGPT and its analogues.
The company announced the appearance of a car control panel based on a generative AI. The new human-like interface can change the tone of its voice, ask clarifying questions, check the meeting schedule, notify if the car`s driver is going to be late, show the opening hours of shops and restaurants indicated by the destinations in the navigator.
Amid the boom in artificial intelligence, other car manufacturers including Volkswagen, BMW and Hyundai are also promising to introduce advanced voice assistants powered by the deep learning language models used in chatbots.
A number of revolutionary changes in the car-manufacturing industry were presented in Las Vegas. The Honda company demonstrated the innovative Afeela car, which is controlled remotely using a PlayStation game joystick. The novelty was shown by Izumi Kawanishi, the head of the joint venture of Sony and Honda.
According to Sony Group Corporation CEO Kenichiro Yoshida, they want to contribute to the development of mobility technology through their experience in the field of entertainment, as well as strengthen security through CMOS sensors.
The name “CMOS” (or КМОН) stands for complementary metal-oxide-semiconductor structure. This is an advanced technology that, in addition to Sony, is also used by Apple to achieve high quality photos and images. In Honda cars, it will perform a practical function in the safety system of the driver and passengers.
The Hyundai company is a recognized leader in the production of hydrogen fuel cell vehicles. Basically, these are electric vehicles that run on compressed hydrogen. But despite such cars being quickly refuelable and having almost zero carbon footprint, they didn`t gain the same popularity as electric cars.
However, the Korean manufacturer believes that the vehicles, whose only emission is water, have a great future. Moreover, like Tesla, Hyundai does not just create cars, but also everything necessary for their maintenance.
Thus, at the exhibition, the company presented the technology for obtaining hydrogen from garbage, and more specifically, organic waste and plastic. The conversion process itself involes multiple steps though: firstly, sewage sludge (biowaste) turns into biogas, which in turn becomes hydrogen.
